Maa Mahalaxmi Group's story

In this calendar year 2015, five women members from Jayramguda village of Rayagada district in Odisha, India formed a Self Help Group called Maa Mahalaxmi to access loans from Mahashakti Foundation and expand their businesses. Santilata is one of them. She is 46 years old and lives with her husband, one daughter, and two sons. The member standing in the middle with raised hand in the photo is Santilata.

Along with her husband, Santilata is doing vegetable cultivation and has been in this business for the last 10 years. Santilata earns about 9,500 INR per month from this business which is insufficient to meet the day to day expenses of her family as well as the farm expenses. She wants to expand her business by taking a loan from Mahashakti Foundation. She will utilize this loan to buy fruit and vegetables like apples, bananas, coconuts, tomatoes, cauliflowers, peppers, carrots, onions, etc. She expects a good return from her business by expanding it. Santilata hopes to give her daughter a better education so she can build a bright career.

The other four members of this group are also involved in similar businesses and doing vegetable cultivation and such.
