Saquilla Group's story

Chichicastenango, a city in western Guatemala, is a place well known for its colorful clothing and its bustling market. It is home to Mayan people from many different places, who speak the indigenous Maya language Kiché. Maria is a 21-year-old young woman on her second disbursement with Kiva. She was able to study through 5th grade in primary school and is now married, with 3 children. To support her family, she runs a successful business selling shoes for women, which are distributed within and outside of the city. Maria is requesting a loan in order to increase the shoe inventory. She will buy different shoe styles, sizes, and brands. For extra income, in a similar manner she also buys and sells “cortes” (traditional Guatemalan skirts) in the town plaza, and sells pigs and chickens which she raises at home. The Saquilla group of women is very happy working with investors who provide their businesses with the opportunity to generate greater profits, and allow the women the chance to gain knowledge of investment and saving through the monthly sessions they attend.
