A loan helped to build a toilet in her home.

Jlg-009-Panikkampatti Group's story

Twenty-one-year-old Sagunthala lives with her husband and two little children in Kulithalai in the state of Tamil Nadu. She leads a group of four women who need financial assistance to construct toilets in their homes.

The sanitation crisis in India is a result of poor infrastructure and lack of education. This group of four has understood the importance of having a toilet at home, but they do not have the means to build one. With no access to a toilet, their families have to walk long distances to answer nature's call in private: in dense bushes or isolated fields. Their women and girls, seeking privacy, often resort to waking up before sunrise to relieve themselves.

Due to the lack of sanitation facilities, their families are at risk of infection and fall ill often, spending a significant portion of their savings on medical expenses each month. The women and daughters in their families are exposed to the additional risk of molestation.

Together, they seek a loan of INR 56,000 to build toilets in their homes. Your loan will provide these four families the privacy of using their own toilet, which will be a big step towards a better standard of living for them. Higher standards of hygiene will also lead to reduced medical expenses, and hence, more savings in the long run.
