Elsa's story

Elsa is a 58-year-old woman, married with two children who are 16 and 19 years old, and her business is the sale of food. She is a good mother, patient, optimistic, generous, responsible and very hardworking. She works in the community "Chua cocani" which is located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, 75 km from the center of the city, and has 4,000 inhabitants divided into ten communities. The region is characterized by its productive agriculture and fishing sectors and is fundamentally touristic. It has a cold and dry climate with a temperature that varies during the day between 0 and 12 degrees Celsius. She has dark skin, brown eyes, long black hair worn in a braid, a short stature and a thin physique. She wears traditional clothing (hat, wrap, and "pollera" skirt), her native tongue is Aymara which is spoken in the region and she speaks Spanish because of the general culture and for her business. She shares her life with her husband who works in agriculture and her children who study and work. They live in their own house built of adobe and straw with a corrugated iron roof and a cement floor, as well as a pump well and electricity but no sewage. Her business is the sale of food made from locally produced ingredients such as: fried trout (with sides of rice and potato starch), fried ispi [fish from Lake Titicaca] (with boiled potatoes and potato starch), frog's legs (with fried potatoes and salad), fish soup, "aji de bogas" and others. "The principal character of the place is traditional food. We cook everything that we produce," she says. The advantage of her business is that she sells daily. The disadvantage is the lack of capital for the construction of a room to use as a dining room. Her dream is to improve her business. She wishes to buy construction materials to construct a dining room for her business. This is her first loan cycle with the institution in her three years doing this job. It is for these reasons that Elsa requests a loan to buy construction materials to construct a dining room for her business.
