Maria's story

Mariya is an entrepreneur from Nikopol. She is 65, married with two grown kids. Mariya owns a vending kiosk selling women’s clothing in the central city marketplace. Mariya doesn’t have any hired employees, she works by herself. Mariya used to work at a factory. However, then the factory got closed, people were downsized or resigned themselves and Mariya ended up with no means for living. This is how she decided to get self-employed and launch her own start up. She started selling jeans clothing imported from Poland. Within a few years she realized there were very few market vendors offering quality women’s clothing merchandise which is why she decided to fill the niche and it was quite successful. This time Mariya is requesting 18 000 Grivnyas to purchase women’s clothing inventory for further sale in her kiosk. At her age most women in Ukraine prefer to stop working and just stay home working in their gardens or watching TV. However, Mariya is very active and energetic, she believes she should work and help her family while she still can do it. She is planning to reinvest generated income in her business and meet some of the current needs of her family as well.
