Christine's story

It is common to have a chicken farm in Kenya, but starting your own business is something else entirely. Christine is a smallholder mixed farmer based in Kapsowar, a remote village in Kenya. She is a loving mother and has been practicing mixed farming for the last ten years. To earn a decent living, she sells milk and greens and engages in numerous small personal businesses.

Only recently, she started seeing how she could make more money through poultry farming. In the past, she saw raising hens as just a hobby. She wants to sell eggs, but assumes that the quantity she produces will not make economic sense. She needs to purchase more poultry. However, her biggest challenge today is limited funds to expand her business.

Christine is seeking a loan of KES 20,000 from Kiva lenders, via Juhudi Kilimo, to purchase poultry. Future proceeds from the commercialization of her poultry farm are already committed to pay for her children's education. In the long run, she is confident that her efforts will translate into a better quality of life for her family.
