Capulines Group's story

Some Mexican communities are noted for conserving their Mazahua traditions such as their language and their traditional festivals. The most common businesses in the area are growing corn and raising a variety of animals.

The Capulines group comes from this community and their name makes reference to a native tree of the area whose fruit is a small dark berry that housewives prepare in a variety of desserts like marmalade, candies, atole and tamales.

Viviana is very young but has a great entrepreneurial spirit. She is single and lives with her parents. For two years she has been buying and selling clothing. Her desire to do this business occurred when she started to work in Mexico City. "I realized that clothing was very cheap there compared to my community where it is really expensive. For this reason I felt motivated and opened my business", she commented.

However with her first investment she had to sell gifts and with this income gradually bought clothing. Currently she has a shop inside her house. She sells in cash and also extends credit to her most trustworthy clients and this generates more income.

In her community she has a small amount pf competition but this does not worry her as she is sure that her quality and service are unequaled. She travels every to weeks to Mexico City to buy more merchandise. She is requesting a loan to buy graduation dresses as the end of the school year is close and sales increase.

Viviana's goal is to have a stable business in a municipality with greater movement of people so that her income can increase.

The other members of the group are: Apolonia who will invest in tarpaulins and tubes; Raúl in candies; Victoria in turkeys; Marlen in her grocery store and Filomena in cattle. The photograph was taken in Viviana's business. She is wearing a brown top.
