A loan helped to purchase more inventory for her deli.

Elizabeth's story

Originally from Colombia, Elizabeth moved to the US and began working as a salesperson selling Spanish products, such as Goya, not easily acquired in the US. While searching for bodega clients in this role, she discovered there was a big and untapped market for Spanish products and decided to open her own store. In 2010 she opened La Estrella Supermarket, a grocery store and deli, in Union City, NJ and quickly built a strong reputation in the community due to her positive attitude, friendly demeanor, and great professionalism.

Her supermarket offers grocery staples as well as fresh deli meats and prepared Colombian food including rice, beans, sandwiches, and empanadas. The store is one of the largest food markets in the area that carries specialty items such as Goya products. She lives in the apartment above the store, and every morning she wakes up early so she can open at 7:00 am to serve breakfast and provide lunch to customers who stop in to take some to work with them. A single mother of two, she enlists her kids in helping her reliably keep the store open seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Her son works full-time for her, and her daughter helps out a few hours a week.

This loan will help Elizabeth to purchase more inventory for her grocery store and deli so she can continue to provide delicious Colombian foods and grocery staples to the community of Union City, New Jersey.
