Julienne's story

Julienne is 41 years old. She lives in the urban commune of Antsirabe in the highlands of Madagascar with her husband and three sons. In order to meet her family's needs, she had to change her line of work. Two years ago, she started selling her own wares. She offers her customers various day-to-day items and accessories, such as batteries, cosmetic products, domestic items and dry goods. She mainly carries out her business as a wandering street vendor and places herself in strategic positions depending on crowd numbers and special events, such as festivals and large gatherings. Julienne requested assistance from Vahatra to start up her business two years ago. She has also succeeded in making a distinct increase in her capital and has built up some savings. With this new loan, she plans on diversifying the products she offers by purchasing torch lamps (500), padlocks (20) and cigarette lighters (20), as well as offering her customers a wider selection of goods. Julienne's priorities are still ensuring that her family's needs are meet by assuring her children's current and future well-being as best she can. In order to do this, she hopes to be able to finish construction work on their home with the profits from her business.
