Esmeralda Group's story

The beautiful Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is surrounded by picturesque mountains and volcanos. In the southwestern part of the lake is San Juan La Laguna and high in the mountains above the town is the small village of Palestina. Ten hard working ladies with small businesses make up the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Esmeralda” in Palestina. They are happy that their businesses are helping their families and improve the quality of their lives. Twenty-eight year old Gemima is a successful businesswoman who has been supported by microloans from Friendship Bridge and KIVA investors. She and her family make pants. At this time, she is requesting a new loan to buy a larger variety and quantity of fabrics to make pants that more customers will want to purchase. She wants to be sure to have plenty of inventory available at all times. The entire Trust Bank “Esmeralda” is requesting a loan to increase their inventories of products and raw materials. They know that new investment loans will grow their businesses. The ladies mentioned they also are grateful for the very beneficial “Microcredit Plus” educational program. Each month they learn about important topics that they can use in their daily lives including health, hygiene, and business management tools. One recent topic they highlighted was learning how to assert their rights as women. They thank the KIVA investors for supporting the Friendship Trusts Bank which help the ladies to fulfill their dreams, provide for their families, and develop the community into a better place to live for all!
