Tzancoton Group's story
Nahualá is in the Department (State) of Sololá in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Tzancoton” is located here. The seven members of the group (seen in the photo) proudly wear their traditional clothing. They all have small businesses, such as animal husbandry and the production of fajas (belts), huipiles (blouses), cortes (skirts), and dress making. Manuela is the President of “Tzancoton”. She is 59 years old, married and has three children. Seeing the need to support her husband with additional income, Manuela decided to create her own business weaving huipiles and embroidering them. She has created her own designs which appeal to her clients and have been profitable. Like so many Maya women in Guatemala, Manuela did not have access to an education. Each day she has had to struggle to improve her small business. With the new loan, she plans to buy raw material (yarns in many different colors and quality). These yarns will help her business grow and earn extra profits. The additional income will support her children’s education which she believes is the basis for their sound development. Thank you Kiva lenders for your generous support and helping those who are needy but have a desire to excel !!!
