Artillery's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped To invest in raw materials and employ people to process this season's organic cashew harvest.

Artillery's story

Artillery is a restaurant chain and health food business that works directly with its suppliers - farmers in Cambodia - to build a healthy ecosystem and support local economies, particularly in rural agricultural communities. Artillery began as a small arts cafe three years ago, and by the end of 2015 will have expanded to three locations in two cities and approximately 50 Cambodian staff - with more than half of its employees are young women, and many who are also young students studying at university. The focus of the restaurant is to serve healthy food to customers at cafes in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The mission of business is to work with local farms and food enterprises to develop organic food production, create market demand for chemical free products, and raise health awareness among consumers. The first farming project Artillery undertook since 2013 is with a group of families in Kampong Thom, a farming cooperative of 4,000 farmers who raise and harvest Organic certified cashew nuts. Their local production partner, Mekong Rain, supports their organic farming practices then purchases the raw cashew kernals and processes the nuts at a facility in the village. Check out this video which depicts Artillery supply chain to get organic cashew nuts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXpMETuglUE This creates local jobs particularly for women to stay in their community and work closely to home and their families - and at the same time those farming families can avoid the dangerous health impacts of industrial chemicals used in agriculture. The processed nuts are sold to Artillery, which helps to create the local market demand for organic products in the restaurants and other shops. This loan allows us to advance money to the farming cooperative to invest in raw materials and employ the people to begin processing this season's cashew harvest. After the harvest and processing, Artillery will use and retail the organic products in shops and markets across Cambodia. The loan also allows us to go beyond just cashew nuts, and begin these organic farming projects in other rural communities with other locally grown crops - such as palm sugar, avocados, and wild raw honey. How the loan will perform: The first tranche (“Tranche 1”) of USD 10,000 will be loaned to Artillery Cafe to purchase Cashew nuts from Mekong Rain on behalf of Artillery. The remaining USD 20,000 will be reserved for 2 tranches of USD 10,000 each to be employed in the same way for other supplies to be determined. The loan will be repaid in 3 years because Artillery needs USD 30,000 for 3 consecutive seasons as a pledge for suppliers.
