Laidou Group's story
The women of the LAIDOU group are on average 42 years old, with three children, all living in traditional, large families in TENE/SEGOU (fourth largest administrative region in the Republic of Mali). These women all met through family and neighborhood links, and are involved in the purchase and salle of vegetables, grains, soaps and condiments. Subsequent to having correctly reimbursed previous loans, the women are asking fo their 13th loan. Tata, seen standing in the middle of the photo, plans to use her loan to purchse 10 packs of Maggi cubes, 40 kilos of onions, 20 liters of oil, 20 kilos of shea butter, 3 baskets of tomatoes, 25 kilos of salt, 5 kilos of peppers and 5 boxes of tomato concentrate. She stocks up from wholesalers, and sells to a customer base of women and men, for cash or credit. She hopes to earn a monthly benefit of 50 000 FCFA that she will primarily use to cover the health, nutrition, clothing and school fees for her family, the rest will be reinvested in her business.
