Tulashi Group's story
Arati is an active and confident lady from Titilagarh town of Balangir district in Odisha, India. She is 43 years old and hails from a poor Schedule Caste family. Her family is comprised of her husband and two sons of 22 and 20 years old. Her family lives in a small mud house. Arati is standing on the extreme right with her hand raised in the photo. In December 2014 Arati along with other ten women of her hamlet formed a Self Help Group (SHG) named Tulashi to avail themselves of a loan from Mahashakti Foundation and expand their small enterprises. Arati herself has been running a Tiffin stall in her locality for last 12 years with the hand-holding support of her husband. Apart from that her husband also sells the Tiffin at the railway station. Her two sons help her in this business. Arati earns a monthly income of INR 5,000 from the above business. Out of this income she hardly able to manage her household and business expenses. As Arati says, now her children are grown up she has to think of their future but with the present little income she cannot do anything. So she wants to expand her business by taking a loan from Mahashakti Foundation. From the present loan Arati wants to purchase more stock of oil, dough, sugar etc. so as to have a bigger production of Tiffin items. She hopes this will help her to add some extra income to start a new Tiffin stall for her elder son. Arati also hopes to save enough to build a good house and pay for the marriage of her sons. Among the other members 2 members are running general stores, 2 members have push cart Tiffin vending, 2 members have furniture service center,s 1 member is running a tent house and 3 members are doing vegetable vending.
