La Unión 2 Group's story
La pedrera [the quarry] is one of the most recognized places in the community. It has this name because it is part of the hill where, over 10 years ago, rock was extracted to use in foundations for construction. In this place is the group La Unión 2, formed by hardworking people who have decided to carry out business with the firm goal of offering a better quality of life to their family. They are: María Victoria – Snacks Selva – Beef María – Roasted chicken Irayda – Cosmetics and piñatas Leidy, Laura – Food Vicente – Construction Martin – Orange sales “A woman of faith is a successful woman,” states Irayda, better known as “La Tota.” She is a single mother of a 6-year-old girl. For the last five years she has worked selling cosmetics by catalogue (mascara, eyeliner, foundation, perfume). In addition, she also makes and sells piñatas, garlands, and wreaths. She works in a repair shop and takes advantage of the space to sell oranges, in this way increasing her income to cover her daughter’s school expenses. “She is my main drive. I would do anything for her.” Irayda says that thanks to the granted loans, she has been able to provide a better quality of life for her daughter and this time she needs to invest in newspaper, glossy paper, tissue paper, crepe paper, balloons, and starch to make more crafts, but also to buy a box of cosmetics that her customers have requested from her. “Thanks to the loans, business has improved, but now I want to start a small piñata store.” *The photo was taken in the home of don Vicente who works in construction. Behind the members one can see the wood that he uses in his business. Irayda is dressed in a yellow blouse.
