Gruhalaxmi Group's story
Nandini, the lady standing with raised hand in the photo, is a hardworking, active and confident woman from village Damjhar of Nuapada district in Odisha, India. Her age is 37 and she is residing with her husband, a son of 19 years, and a daughter of 17 years old. Damjhar is a remotely located village located in the poorest area of India. Nandini has a turmeric cultivation farm of 2 hectares with a deep bore well facility being managed by her husband for the last six years. Along with turmeric she has also cultivated different types of vegetables like brinjal (eggplant), cauliflower, cabbage, chilly, ladies finger etc. in her farm. She sells this produce in a nearby town 20 kilometers distant. From the above two businesses, Nandini earns a monthly income of 6000 INR. With this scanty income Nandini somehow maintains her family. She says, “I want to expand my business and cultivation but due to lack of proper fencing of the farm it is not possible to utilize the whole of the area. After Mahashakti started their intervention in her village, Nandini, along with 14 other women from her village, formed a Self Help Group named Gruhalaxmi and Nandini took out a loan of 12,000 INR. With this loan she will purchase stone, bricks and cement and barbed wire for a strong fencing of her farm, so that she can use the entire area for cultivation and earn more income for her family. Nandini has big dreams of the marriage of her daughter, higher education for her son, and converting her small farm into a big one. Among the other 14 members, eight members are doing vegetable cultivation, two members have a general store, another two have a rice huller and the other two have milk businesses.
