Yulis María's story
Yulis lives in a neighbourhood located to the south-west of Barranquilla. She is the owner of a grocery store, which has been in operation since 2009. She sells everything the average family needs: rice, oil, legumes, vegetables, meat, fruit, and other things. The idea for the business came from her brother-in-law; he was the former owner and he proposed selling it to her and she accepted. Her main clients are residents of the neighbourhood and people travelling through the sector. They make their purchases with cash or on credit. The store is open from 6:00am to 9:00pm every day. Yulis makes her purchases with cash at the wholesalers in Barranquilla. She is currently applying for a Kiva loan. This is the first loan that she has applied for through Fundación Mario Santo Domingo. She will use it to buy supplies, such as rice, oil, legumes, vegetables, meat, and fruit to restock her business. Yulis is 43 years old with a 13-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter. She is a woman with big goals. In the long term, she wishes to convert her grocery store into self-service. She also wants to give her family a better quality of life and remodel parts of her house.
