Martha Lesbia's story
Martha Lesbia is a young, 31 year old woman, mother of two school-aged children. She originates from the La Palma region, located 8 kilometres from the municipality of El Sauce in the west of Nicaragua. Ten years ago she started her business with the help of her husband, who gave her a small amount of capital in order to start a business. She decided to start a grocery store in her house, taking advantage of the fact that in that community there was no business of this type, meaning that the population had to travel all the way to El Sauce to do their shopping. Martha is very active in her home and her business, so much so that from 5am she gets up to go out on her bicycle to a neighbouring community to grind the maize she needs to make tortillas for food, as is the custom in these regions, and then she attends customers in her store. Now, she needs a loan to buy chicken, fruits, oil, rice, sugar, soap, clothing, toilet paper, and gas, since during the winter people who live far away from the communities take advantage of buying goods for the home before the rivers and streams grow and cut off their access. She hopes and trusts in God that the Kiva investors approve her request for a loan in order to carry out her investment.
