Kankele Group's story
The women of Kankele Group average 38 years of age and four children. They all live in extended traditional families in Tion / Ségou (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They got to know each other through bonds of kinship. They buy and sell cereals and condiments. Having fully repaid their previous loans, the women of Kankele Group are seeking their eighth solidarity loan (group loan). Awa is the woman standing on the right in the photograph. She intends to use her loan to buy 20 kg of onions, 10 liters of cooking oil, 2 packs of Maggi bouillon cubes, 5 kg of salt, 10 kg of shea butter, and 5 kg of chili peppers. She gets her supplies locally from wholesalers, and sells for cash, and often on credit, to a clientele comprising both men and women. She foresees turning an average monthly profit of XOF 50'000, to be used to cover expenses related to healthcare, food, clothing, and schooling. The remainder will be reinvested in her business.
