Maa Binapani Shg Group's story

The 13 members of the Maa Binapani Self Help Group (SHG) are responsible and hardworking women from the same community; they all live in traditional families in a small villages in the Boudh district of Odisha, India. They collaborate with the microfinance institution, People's Forum, so that they can run their farming activities smoothly during the winter season. They are on their first loan with the People's Forum and the previous loans from other institutions have been repaid in full. Sobha, who is standing with her hand raised in the photo, is a 43-year-old woman who grows paddy and vegetables. With her loan portion, she is planning to buy inputs, seeds, and farming materials, and to pay for labor to farm and hoe a hectare of land. Once harvested, the produce will be sold in Boudh and phulbani city to a mixed customer base. She is expecting to make an average profit of 60,000 India Rupees (INR) at the end of the season. This profit will allow her to repay her loan and also help out her children for better schooling.
