Bhubaneswari Group's story

Ahalya is the leader of a group that lives in Paikbahal of Tarbha block in the district of Subarnapur, Odisha, India. She is a married woman of 31 years. She has a small family comprising four members: her husband and one daughter and one son, aged 5 and 10 years. The member sitting 1st from the left in the first row with is Ahalya. Like most families in the locality, she and her husband are running a vegetable shop. She sells tomatoes, brinjal, potatoes, cauliflower, etc. in her shop. She is a very active lady who wants some extra income out of her own efforts. Ahalya’s husband helps her in purchasing vegetables from different villages and nearby towns to run the shop smoothly. At present, her family income is Rs. 5,000 per month from her vegetable shop, which is not sufficient to maintain her family. To improve her living condition and to earn some extra income, she wants to avail herself of a loan from Mahashakti. From the loan amount, she will purchase rice in bulk quantity and grocery items to access a cash discount and also save transportation cost, which she incurs frequently. She has a dream to have a wholesale shop in the town and educate her children in a better school in the town. Previously there were 15 members but subsequently one member refused to take loan, hence in the group there are 14 members. The other members of her group are Hemanti, Kabita, Pankajini, Tul, Lakshmi, Jashobanti, Saraswiti, Souda, Basanti, Suruchi, Mithila, Urmila, and Bhala, who are doing individual businesses in the town.
