Villa Hermosa Group's story
Eight women form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Villa Hermosa”, a town that is located in Quiche in the northwestern region of Guatemala. The majority of the women in this area produce the typical and beautifully hand-woven goods that are sold in local and distant markets. They also sell chickens, turkeys, fish and tortillas. Marta is a young woman of twenty-five years, married with two children aged six and four. She is a member of the Trust Bank “Villa Hermosa” and is beginning her third loan cycle. Marta sells nuts by the pound in Guatemala City and also on the border of El Salvador. She has found the business profitable but needs more capital to grow. Marta is asking for a new loan from Friendship Bridge in order to buy a large quantities of nuts: macadamias, cashews and almonds. Marta wants to provide her children with a good education. Therefore, she strives to earn extra income through her business so that she does not rely solely upon the income of her husband. The women of the “Villa Hermosa” Trust Bank are very grateful for the opportunity to have credit from Friendship Bridge that is financed by people around the world through Kiva. Thank you Kiva investors for helping to fund “Microcredit Plus,” a Friendship Bridge program that provides education in the areas of health, hygiene and nutrition as well as self-esteem and violence against women. The women learn effective business management practices and gain essential knowledge about business planning, budgeting, accounting, customer service, marketing and pricing.
