Esmeralda Group's story
Totonicapan is located in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Not long ago, a new Friendship Bridge Trust Bank called “Esmeralda” was formed in one of Totonicapan’s municipalities. “Esmeralda” is made up of 10 entrepreneurial women who want to improve their different businesses that include selling tortillas, fruits, corn meal processing, animal husbandry, and typical woven textiles, as well as small shops with sundry daily items. One of the group’s members is Celestina, who is 38 years old and married. She has 8 children - the oldest is 19 and the youngest is 6. Her husband is a field worker whose income is not suffient enough for the family’s needs since their children are in school. A few years ago, Celestina began a business selling tortillas in the market in Totonicapan. After awhile she was able to open another tortilla stall in the market. Now, with 2 stalls, she needs captital to maintain and grow the businesses. She is requesting a loan in order to purchase several bags of corn, lime, wood, and other products that will make her businesses more successful. Since Celestina’s businesses had increased in sales, she was able to hire two women to help her make her orders on time. The members of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Esmeralda” are very grateful to the KIVA investors for giving them the opportunity to receive loans which, with the new capital, makes it possible for their businesses to grow. Thank you KIVA investors!
