Nyeleni Group's story
The majority of the five members of the Nyeleni group live in monogamous households and they average 38 years of age with four children each. They all live in Kanadjiguila in the municipality of Mandé, which lies in the Kati circle. The group members got to know each other as neighbors and through their income-generating activities at Kanadjiguila market; they all have small businesses selling clothing, cereals and condiments and practising restauration. They decided to collaborate with Soro Yiriwaso with a view to expanding their businesses and they are on their third group loan. Mariam (who is sitting on the far right of the photo) is a great vendor of clothing and is planning to use her loan to buy 60 meters of damask fabric wholesale in Bamako. She resells her goods door-to-door on a retail basis in Kanadjiguila to a customer base made up mainly of women. With this loan, Mariam is hoping to make an average monthly profit of 150,000FCFA, which will be used to reinvest in her business and to provide for her household's small needs.
