Mkombozi Mwenge Group's story

Sharifa is her mid-60s and is a widowed woman. She has five children: three sons and two daughters. Only one of them lives at home and is at school; the rest have finished schooling. For a period of 20 years now, Sharifa has made her living by running a genge [food stall] selling fruits and vegetables. She gets up early in the morning (8 am) to start her business. Sometimes she needs to start in the market center to buy new fruits and vegetables. Her business is not located far from her home, so it ends at night (8 pm). She is able to make a very good profit every day. Sharifa is requesting a loan from Kiva's partner Tujijenge Tanzania, which is her eleventh loan from Tujijenge. She will use this loan to pay for new business stock. She used her previous loans, all of which were paid back successfully, to restock her business with fruits and vegetables. Sharifa used her business profit to build a house, buy home furniture, and cover school fees and home expenses. She is so thankful for Kiva's support since now she has a house for her family. She dreams of expanding her business up to a genge duka [small neighborhood store]. Sharifa will share this loan with her loan group, "Mkombozi Mwenge", which consists of eight members. The members of the group will hold each other accountable for paying back the loan.
