Nyame Ye Group's story

Kweku is a member of the Nyame Ye Group. He is 69 years old and lives with his family in the Asebu District in the Central Region of Ghana. He has four children, the youngest of whom is 20 years old. All his children are working and plan to attend University in the future. He has also been blessed with three grandchildren by his eldest son. Kweku was the head teacher of the Asebu DA primary school before he retired. Now he grows limes and oranges on a 15-acre farm. He has been a farmer for the past nine years. Currently, he has a contractual agreement with a local company who will buy his crops wholesale. With a wealth of experience in the business, Kweku has the confidence and expertise to expand his farm. However, he finds the manual labor involved in maintaining such a huge farm difficult as he is getting on in years. It is also difficult to work the farm when it rains. As such, he hires laborers to help seed the field, weed and prune the plants, as well as to harvest the crops. A loan of GHS 2,000 will help him cover the high labor costs for his business. In spite of the challenges posed by harsh weather conditions and the amount of labor required to work the farm, Kweku is determined to increase his output so that he can improve the lives of his family. In particular, his income will fund the educational needs of his children and grandchildren. He is very thankful for the financial support from microlenders.
