Manuel's story

Manuel, age 54, lives in the Nahualá municipality in the Sololá department. He has six children. The first one is 32 years old and works doing household chores. The second one is 29 years old and works doing household chores. The third, age 22, is a day worker. The fourth, age 18, is studying to be a teacher. The fifth, age 16, works at a factory in the capital city. The sixth, age 13, is an upper elementary grade. Manuel gets his income from buying and selling bananas. He does this in the community where he lives. He says that it gives him good profits. He has been engaged in this business activity for ten years. He is requesting a loan for 6, 500 GTQ in order to buy a piece of land. With his earnings Manuel plans to buy more land to cultivate and to improve their living conditions.
