Flor De Maguey Group's story
María is a woman of Ethnicity Ixil Maya, she is 43 years old and lost her husband 10 years ago. Her husband fell ill with a stomach illness that could not be determined. Sadly, she says, "if I had credit at that time I had had enough income to take my husband to the hospital," but then she had no access to credit and did not generate revenue. After her husband's death, she had to work to support her 4 children. With big effort she started to improve her situation thanks to weaving and selling fabrics, and that´s how she managed to send her two daughters to school. The oldest one, who is now 17 years old, will graduate this year as an Accountant, which is a credit to her mother since she came through 2nd grade. María works every day from 4:00 to 9:00 pm, combining 8 hours of weaving with housework. She is so active that she has not only generated income for her and her family, but also employs six poor women in her community. With her credit María hopes to strengthen her textile business and hire porters to plant corn. She is very happy about having learned how to use credit and having undertaken this business. She does not know what would have happened if she had not access to credit, she is pretty sure she had not been able to educate their daughters.
