Ziomara Navidad's story
Ziomara is a fighting woman, 31 years old, who has been working in the agricultural field for many years and it is her main source of income. She has her own way of working her property where she grows a variety of coffee, some café 90 and the other part lempira, which is much more resistant to rust fungus and pests. She has more than 8 years experience working along with her husband on the property that was given to them by Xiomara’s parents and it was her parents who instructed and guided them in this work. Her main customers are the various middlemen who buy her product at the door of her home in each season minimizing transportation costs of the product and thanks to this generating a bit more income. Her coffee crops are located about 20 minutes from their home which she walks with her husband and her 4 children, 3 children who study at a community school and 1 stays home as he is the youngest but only the eldest engages in the work of his father and mother. Due to financial problems Xiomara is asking for funding in order to buy agricultural supplies to apply in order to improve the plantation harvest by giving attention to pest problems, frost (a climate factor) and more. Her goals, plans and other strategies are to continue fighting to do her farm work so that in this way she can satisfy the household and farming needs while at the same time building equity for her children.
