Benkan Group's story
The Benkan Group is made up of six married women who are, on average, 31 years old and have four children. They all live in traditional, extended families in the Massablacoura neighbourhood of the town of Bougouni. They know one another through friendship, business and neighbourhood connections. The members all want to improve their business performance so they work with the field partner, Soro Yiriwaso. This will be their sixth loan. The previous loans were all fully and correctly repaid. Rokia (standing fourth from the right in the photo) sells food ingredients. She will use her loan to buy nine baskets of tomatoes, 250 kilos of pumpkins and 150 kilos of cabbages from wholesalers in Sikasso. She sells her goods at the market and from door to door, to various customers on a cash or credit basis. Rokia expects to earn an average of 35,000 francs CFA a month, and will use this money to invest in her business and repay her loan.
