Wassomagni Group's story

The women of Wassomagni Group average 35 years of age and 4 children. They all live in extended traditional families in Yangasso / Ségou (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They got to know each other through bonds of kinship. They buy and sell condiments, cereals, cosmetics, and various products. After having repaid their previous loans without problems, they are seeking their sixth solidarity loan (group loan). Awa, the second woman from the left in the sitting row in the photograph, intends to use her loan to buy 30 kg of rice, 10 kg of fonio (a kind of millet), 15 kg of bean, 15 kg of millet, 5 kg of onion, 20 liters of cooking oil, and 5 packs of Maggi bouillon cubes. She gets her supplies locally, and sells the dish she prepares, for cash and often on credit, to a clientele comprising both women and men. She intends to turn an average monthly profit of XOF 45'000, to be used to cover expenses related to healthcare, food, clothing, and school. The remainder will be reinvested in her business.
