Ato Alama Group's story
'Ato Alama' is a group member of the business association 'Confiance' in Kangaré. The women of the group know one another through family and neighbourhood connections. They are, on average, 35 years old, married and have three children. They all live in large, traditional families in Kangaré, in the prefecture of Yanfolila (Sikasso region of the Republic of Mali). They have all been successfully running different small businesses for several years. Mamou (standing on the far right in the photo) sells food ingredients such as tomatoes, onions and cabbage. The members of the group would all like to be able to respond to the needs of their customers, so they work with the field partner, Soro Yiriwaso, this will be their second group loan. Mamou is the group president and excels in the sale of food ingredients. She will use her loan to buy ten baskets of tomatoes and two sacks of onions, from wholesalers locally and in Selingue. She sells her produce in Kangaré to both men and women, for cash or on credit. Mamou hopes to earn 30,000 francs CFA a month which will enable her to repay her loan and invest in her food business.
