Mercy Marina's story
The Primero De Abril financing group meets every two weeks in Cantón Montecristi, known for its rich pre-colonial culture and handicrafts that are nationally and internationally renowned. It's the birthplace of the famous Panama straw hat. This is where Mercy lives, she's a 49 year old single mother of a 16 year old high school student. She lives with her son and a sister of hers who is also single. Mercy is a very hard-working woman who likes to put in an honest day's work to support her son. In her job she sells clothes and Avon products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes, and accessories for women), and in addition she sells charcoal, a widely used product in food businesses. She does her selling door-to-door and works every day, either at home or on her routes. She sells on credit and collects payments every weekend. For over four years she's been at this job that has allowed her to support her son by herself. This loan is to purchase clothes, perfume, creams, cosmetics, and several other products. She's been in the financing group for 3 years and likes it because of the help she's received through the loans. Her dream is to give her son the best education.
