Adelina Valentin's story
Adelina, age 27, is married and has three children. The two oldest are in different grades at the community school. The youngest is at home under her care. Adelina has a fourth grade education. She was not able to continue on in school due to her parents’ lack of financial support. Her parents have scarce financial resources. Her husband is the main support with his field work. He is the one who takes charge of most of the work in the field. She spends part of the day at home preparing the food for her children while they go to school. She also makes food for her husband. When her older children get out of school, they help their father work in the field. They help with different activities like clearing the fields, gathering the grains, and other activities that do not require a lot of physical effort. Adelina says that she has two ‘manzanas’ [a manzana is a land measurement unit equivalent to 7000 square meters] of land where she grows coffee. She gets income for the family from the coffee harvest that takes place once a year. The profits that they get are used to improve the family’s quality of life. However, she needs supplies to provide maintenance and to protect her coffee crops. This is to manage to get a better production and to avoid any damage to the crop. This is why she is requesting help. Her plan for the future, like all coffee producers, is to continue increasing her crops by purchasing land. She also plans to support her children in their education and to give each of them the opportunity that she did not have in her youth due to lack of finances.
