A loan helped to buy ingredients for her catering business.

Kototala Group's story

Kototala is a group in the Benkadi association in Tiele. The group is made up of four married women who know each other through being relations and neighbours. They have an average age of 30 and are all married, with three children on average. The group members are all involved in different businesses, such as catering, like Sali who is pictured sitting in the photo. The women live in large traditional families in Tiele in the Baguineda sub-prefecture (in the Koulikoro region in the Republic of Mali). The women have been running small businesses for several years and are highly sought-after for the food they sell: meat, beans, etc. In order to satisfy growing customer demand, the members of the group decided to join the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance programme three years ago. This is their fourth solidarity loan. Sali intends to use her loan to buy meat, fish, condiments and cereals. She buys her supplies in Bamako and locally from wholesalers, and sells her food to individuals in Tiele, both for cash and on credit, to a customer base that includes both men and women. Sali hopes to make 48 000 CFA francs per month, which will allow her to repay the loan and reinvest in her catering business.
