A loan helped to buy produce.
Djekafo Group's story
Djekafo is a group in the Benkadi association in Tiele. The group is made up of six women who know each other through being relations and neighbours. Their average age is 51 and they are all married, with three children on average. The women are all involved in different businesses, such as selling produce, like Fanta who is pictured sitting on the left. They live in large traditional families in Tiele in the Baguineda sub-prefecture (in the Koulikoro region in the Republic of Mali). The group members have been running small businesses for several years and are highly sought-after for the produce they sell: peppers, tomatoes, onions, etc. In order to satisfy growing customer demand, the members of the group decided to join the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance programme. This is their fourth solidarity loan. Fanta intends to use her loan to buy a large quantity of different kinds of produce. She buys her supplies in Bamako and locally from wholesalers, and sells her produce to individuals in Tiele, both for cash and on credit, to a customer base that includes both men and women. Fanta hopes to make 42 500 CFA francs per month, which will allow her to repay the loan and reinvest in her business.
