Maa Bastaren-B Group's story
Maa Bastaren-B is a Joint Liability Group (JLG) formed in January 2014 by 11 active women entrepreneurs from Juarbandh village in Bolangir district in Odisha, India to take a loan from Mahashakti Foundation to expand their existing businesses. Nirupama is one of them. The lady standing in front with her hand raised in the photograph is Nirupama. She is a very active lady of 29 years who lives with her husband, one son who is seven years old and one daughter who is four years old. Both are studying in school. Nirupama has been running a screen printing unit in her house with the help of her husband for the last eight years. She takes orders for printing of invitation cards and supplies ready made invitation cards to the customers. Her husband purchases the materials like chemicals, paper, color etc. from the nearest wholesale market, which is 40 kilometers away. Her screen printing center has name and fame in the locality for its timely delivery and quality work. Her daily net income in the marriage season (December-June) is 500 INR and in the normal season is 200 INR. But in the present market context, this income is not sufficient for her to manage the household and other expenses. Nirupama is a hard working woman and she wants to expand her business. So with the present loan, she wants to purchase cards, colors and chemicals in bulk to reduce the purchasing cost as she replenishes her stock frequently. Nirupama hopes to educate her children and construct a good house. Like Nirupama, the other 10 members of the group are doing cotton cultivation, vegetable cultivation, a fancy store, a general grocery shop, a Tiffin stall, a tailoring center etc.
