Annet's story

Annet is 44-years-old and is married with five children. She earns her income through the sale of crops and livestock, and she receives a monthly wage as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools. On her land, Annet grows maize, mangoes, beans, sweet potatoes bananas and groundnuts. She also has chickens and pigs. Annet has served as a CKW for the last two years, and she looks forward to renewing her CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW, she will use the materials in her business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of her village, which will help them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money she will earn as a CKW, Annet will be able to meet her family's needs and save to open a shop in her village. Her biggest dream in life is to own the biggest shop in her village to supplement the income earned from the sale of agricultural produce.
