La Esquina (Cuenca) Group's story
The "La Esquina" loan group has twelve members - eleven women and one man - who live in the Sinincay parish of Cuenca. There is a very beautiful church here. The people are very kind and friendly and are keeping up their towns' cultures and traditions. The group's members work in different types of businesses, allowing them to improve their household's financial security and helping them to prosper in their families. The "La Esquina" group is very close-knit and the members support each other during both the good and the bad times. One member of the group is María, who is taking out her first loan alongside her friends and colleagues in the group. María is 54 years old and a single mother to seven children - three of them are now independent and live apart while the other children are all studying at a local school. María owns the house where she lives. María does the housework at home and also raises guinea pigs and chickens. María also works in farming, growing crops both to sell and to consume at home. María will invest this loan in buying pigs, so that she can have more animals. María's dream is to expand her business raising animals.
