Mujeres Luchadoras (Cuenca) Group's story
The lending group Mujeres Luchadoras is comprised of 7 women who honor their name as they strive, sacrifice and struggle everyday to provide their children and families with a better future. They are people who maintain the culture and traditions of their villages. They work in agriculture, animal husbandry and business. They live near the city of Cuenca, a city with beautiful landscapes and colonial architecture for which it was given the name of "Cultural Heritage of Humanity" in December of 1999. One of the members of this group is Delfa, who is in her third loan with her friends and partners in the Mujeres Luchadoras lending group. She likes her group because they are all kind people who continually support each other through good and bad. Delfa is 42 years, is widowed, and in her marriage, conceived 3 children ages 21, 16 and 11. Her first son is married and lives on his own. Her last two children are in school. She does not own her home, so she lives in a leased home. From a young age, Delfa has worked in business. She sells a great variety of clothing, a business that has allowed her to help with her home, and is not the only income for all of the household expenses. She will use this loan to purchase clothing to expand her business. Her goal is to have a store to sell her products from.
