Benkadi Group's story
The Benkadi group is made up of 5 married women and 1 unmarried woman who have an average age of 34 years and an average of 3 children each. They live in traditional extended families in the Masablacoura neighborhood of the city of Bougouni. The women came to know each other as neighbors, friends, and through their businesses. In order to increase their financial capacity and better run their businesses, the women partnered with the microfinance organization Soro Yiriwaso with whom they are on their fifth group loan. Their four previous loans have been fully repaid. Mah, the woman pictured on the far right of the photo, is in the business of selling spices. She plans to use her loan to purchase large quantities of spices from wholesalers in Bougouni. She makes her sales at the market and from her home, at retail for cash and for credit to a customer base made up of both men and women. She hopes to earn an average monthly profit of 30,000 francs CFA which she will reinvest in her business and use to pay back the loan.
