Badenya Group's story
The Badenya group has married and widowed female members, who are on average 49 years of age and have five children. They all live in large traditional families in the town of Fala Sidibela, which is located in the Massigui area of Dioïla prefecture, in the region of Koulikoro (Mali's second-largest administrative region). They all know each other because they are related, or are friends or neighbors, and work selling cereals, shoes, seasonings and clothing. The women are on their 22nd group loan. Mariam, who is pictured third from right to left, works selling shoes. She plans to buy two batches of shoes from stallholders in Massigui, which she will resell in the market and at home to both male and female customers. Mariam hopes to make an average monthly profit of 60,000 francs CFA, which will be reinvested in her business and used to provide for her family, as she is a widow.
