Claudia Maria's story
Claudia is a hardworking and enterprising woman, 32 years old, accompanied (in a partnership) and mother of 2 daughters. The eldest is 10 years old and the younger one is 3. Everyone in her family has been working for many years doing the same activity, coffee, since it is the major source of income to cover household necessities due to the lack of employment in her community and to take advantage of the knowledge of tending to the plantation correctly for profits which are prosperous and positive. Claudia’s partner grows coffee too and also specializes in the purchase of cattle and basic grains for resale. They own the land they work and have a large variety of coffee from the plantation which is 90 percent coffee having cultivated a large part of this product for its resistance to pests, and to rust disease. Their strategy is that the amount grown at the end of the harvest is what they have for the number of bags they need to sell in order to generate the expected earnings. What she sees as problematic is the increase of prices of various supplies to use to provide assistance for their coffee crops which is why she needs financing in order to buy fertilizer, manure, 12-24-12 fertilizer, urea, foliar applications, among other items to help meet the goal she and her partner have proposed for this season. Claudia dreams of expanding the farm in the future putting forth a lot of effort cultivating all the land she has acquired in order to raise her daughters whom she wants to be academically prepared for the future when they are knowledgeable women with advantages.
