A loan helped to purchase fertilizer and seeds.
Guinekanda 2 Group's story
The members of the group "GUINEKANDA 2" are all married women, who average 39 years of age and five children each, all living in polygamous families in Bandiagara, in the 5th administrative region of the Republic of Mali. Bandiagara as a town is 90% cliffs. There, the women's main work involves growing onions and processing shallots and related products. The women transport arable earth uphill to make planting beds for their farm work. They are collaborating with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their market garden work as the rainy season ends. They are on their second loan with the institution after having correctly paid back the first one. The crop grown is essentially onions, as is the case with Salimata, who is standing third from the right in the photo. With her loan, she intends to purchase some seeds and fertilizer. After the harvest, the produce is sold to men and women customers in the village and in Bandiagara. She plans on making a profit of 42,000 francs CFA at the end of the planting effort. This profit will allow her to help out her husband in covering family expenses (the children's schooling costs, healthcare, and food), to purchase small ruminants and poultry, and to reinvest the rest in her work.
