Maa Gardien Group's story
Minakshi, aged 27, is an active lady of Tukla village of Nuapada district in Odisha, India. The lady standing second from the right with a raised hand is Minakshi. She is residing with her husband and two sons of 7 and 3 years. In the year 2009, she, along with three other members of her village, formed a Joint Liability Group named “Maa Gardien” to avail a loan from Mahashakti Foundation to add some extra income to their families by expanding their existing businesses. Minakshi is running in her village a multifarious business of a tent house with a light and sound system, a tea stall, and a daily needs shop with items like biscuits, bread, mixtures, toothbrushes, toothpaste etc., with the help of her husband. During her first loan, Minakshi had a cycle mart, and she was earning a monthly income of 3,000 INR. This is her fifth loan. During her previous four loans, she has been able to diversify her business. She earns a monthly income of 8,000 INR from the existing business. Minakshi says this amount is also not sufficient to meet the present needs of her family. So, to earn some more income, she is planning to add some more items to her present trades. From a part of the present loan of 48,000 INR, she will purchase some light and sound systems for the tent house business, and daily needs items like biscuits, bread, mixtures, toothbrushes, and toothpaste from the other part. Minakshi believes she will earn some more income from this investment, which will help her to manage her family smoothly. She hopes to save enough for the better education of her children. The other three members of the group are Nayan, Pinki and Sabitri, with a fabrication center and tent house, sewing machine selling and repairing center, and auto parts store respectively.
