Corazón De María (Cuenca) Group's story
The group Corazón de María is made up of nine women, who are all friends. Every day they work doing different activities, which give them the opportunity to settle their expenses and improve the economy of their homes. They are all kind and courteous people. They live in the surroundings of Valle parish in Cuenca. This area has a cold climate and its uneven geography makes for beautiful landscapes to enjoy. The main economic activities are agriculture, animal breeding, and trade. One of the members of this group is Gladys. She has been a member of Corazón de María for four years, and over this time has established better friendship ties with all her fellow members, At the same time, the loans have allowed her to have better economic stability. Gladys is 38 years old and married. She has four children as a result of her marriage, aged 23, 22, 17, and 14 years. Her eldest daughter is married but lives in her house and shares the household expenses. Her second and third eldest children, who are sons, are working and helping her economically. Her youngest child, a daughter, is studying at a school in the city. Her husband works as a bricklayer, and the house in which they live is their own. Gladys spends her time doing the household chores, but to contribute to her household’s economy she has been washing other people's clothes for six years. There are also days when she is called to work as a day labourer, and she breeds guinea pigs and chickens at home. She is going to invest her new loan in purchasing chickens and animal feed. Her goals are to make a larger chicken shed and grow in this business.
