Rugashali Tukole Group's story
Maria is 36 years old, and is married with five children ages 15,13,11, 9, and 1 years old. Four of her children attend school and her husband pays their tuition. She is the woman standing at the far left in the first row of the photograph. Maria has worked as a farmer for the last 15 years, which is her major source of income supporting her family. She also operates a small retail shop at home to add to her earnings. Maria has applied for a loan of 600,000 Ugandan shillings for her farming activities, which she will use to buy mulch for her banana plantation and pay workers to plow it. Maria's dream is to buy a motorcycle to help carry manure to the banana plantation and to transport her children to school. Her major challenges are limited capital, the bad weather that affects local agriculture, and price fluctuations in the market. Maria thanks Kiva for being their savior in a time of need.
