Farid Alberto's story
Farid, 42, lives in the town of Soledad in the department of Atlántico. This town is known nationally as the birthplace of the the "butifarra", a type of sausage originally from Catalonia, Spain, which is one of the culinary hallmarks of the Caribbean coast. The main water supply here comes from the Magdalena River which borders the town on the east. Farid lives with his wife and ten-year-old son. He has a business making and selling diverse pastries and sweets. Every day he sells to neighbors and students in the streets or from his home. He buys supplies and materials in cash at the central market in the city of Barranquilla. He learned his trade when he was very young by helping his parents make pastry with artisan ovens. But ten years ago he started his own business. This is his first CrediKiva loan through the Mario Santo Domingo Founation and he will use it to buy a dough sheeter and an oven. He hopes to increase production, reduce costs and in the near future have his own shop, so he can improve his family's well-being.
