Jekafo 5 Group's story
The members of the group known as JEKAFO 5 are married women with an average age of 44, four children, and all live in polygamous families in Tiola, one of the villages of the municipality of Niena in the third administrative region of Mali: Sikasso. They collaborate with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to succeed with their agricultural activities during the rainy season. They are on their sixth loan with the institution, the preceding loans having been correctly reimbursed. Sogona, sitting in the middle, cultivates peanuts. With her loan she intends to pay for plowing and buy seeds and fertilizer to cultivate one hectare. Her produce is sold at the level of the village and in Sikasso, after the harvest, to a clientele composed of men and women. She expects to make a profit of 100,000 F CFA each season. This profit will permit her to repay her loan and also to help her husband with daily expenses.
