Benkadi Ii Group's story

The members of the Benkadi II group are married women who, on average, are 42 years old and have five children. They all live in polygamous families in Niabougou, one of the villages in Niena commune in Sikasso, the third administrative region of Mali. The group is collaborating with the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to better carry out their farming during the rainy season. They are on their second loan with the institution, and their previous loan has been repaid. Barakissa S, standing in the middle [of the photo], grows groundnuts. With her loan, she plans to buy two bags of fertilizer and 11 kilograms of groundnut seed and to pay the costs of labor to cultivate one hectare of land. After the harvest, the crops are sold in the village and in Sikasso to customers who are men and women. Barakissa S hopes to earn 110,000 francs CFA per harvest. These earnings will allow her to pay back her loan and to also help her husband with the everyday expenses.
